DIY Holiday Clay Gift Tags

DIY Holiday Clay Gift Tags.jpgI found this big tub of air-dry clay at Office Depot (you can also get it at Oriental Trading, in bulk from Walmart, at Kohl’s…just keep an eye out) a while back for about $10 (kind of random but I was really into using clay at the time…still am, actually…I tend to get obsessed with materials and never really quit them) so I thought I’d give this clay a try. Obviously meant for children but still fun for adult crafting, the clay is super easy to use but being an air-dry clay, you have to move quicker than you would with an oven bake clay. With the desire to get my hands into something, I started rolling out little balls like cookie dough and decided to make some stamped gift tags to stock up for the holidays just around the bend. Rubber stamps — another on a long list of items I’m slowly collecting — along with a toothpick and a straw were used to create these little guys.

These gift tags are a super simple little craft to make while you’re on the couch or in the kitchen. All you’ll need is some clay, a cookie cutter if you want perfect shapes, a straw, a hard surface and wax paper to work on.

Here are step-by-step photo instructions:

Step 1 DIY Holiday Clay Tags.jpg

step 1: roll out little balls of clay

Step 2 DIY Holiday Clay Tags.jpg

step 2: use a rolling pin (or your hands if you’re going for a more organic look) to flatten out your little ball into a circle or oval shape.

Step 3 DIY Holiday Clay Tags.jpg

step 3: insert a plastic straw into the clay and twist to create a small hole which will allow for ribbon or string later on.

step 3.5: experiment with different hole placement for alternate ways to hang your tag — one hole at the top to hang, one in the center, one hold at each end, three holes in the center like a button…

step 4: use rubber stamps to stamp your designs or phrases into the clay

Step 5 DIY Holiday Clay Tags.jpg

step 5: lay out your finished clay tags to dry (I let mine dry for 48 hours).

Finished tags ready for presents!

Just as I was about to post this, I stumbled upon this post from one of my favorite blogs, Creature Comforts. How funny! These tags look more refined and if that’s the look you want, I’d definitely try the oven bake clay instead of air dry. Plus, there are a lot of color options!I’ll soon start gathering little pinecones and twigs from the neighborhood to keep in a little pile for pretty packages tied up with strings! I may hate Halloween but I’m excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

my christmas presents last year — can’t you just picture a little clay tag on there, too?

Music obsession: covers

  1. “You Really Got a Hold On Me” by She & Him (I could listen to this on repeat for hours. Hours! and you can too — check out the video below!)
  2. “Just Breathe” by Willie Nelson (Willie covering Pearl Jam = awesome)
  3. “Wild Horses” by Chantal Kreviazuk (a beautiful acoustic piano version of the Rolling Stones tune)
  4. “Killing in the Name” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Tyrone Wells (Tyrone’s a local guy, one of my favorite singers and I love seeing him live. He’s got two shows coming up – here’s more info).
  5. “Call Me Maybe” by MacKenzie from The Voice — this guy makes the song sound beachy and like something I’m not afraid to be caught listening to.  That’s saying something!
  6. “Sea of Love” by Cat Power
  7. Use Somebody — both Tyrone Wells and Paramore have done great covers of this popular song.
  8. “One Fine Day” by Natalie Merchant, a lovely and slow cover of The Chiffons uptempo original.
  9. Ray LaMontagne smoothed out and slowed down the sass from “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley.
  10. “How You Like Me Now” by Tona Lucca, one of my favorites from season 2 of The Voice he also covered Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” and a cleaned-up-for-tv version of Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” (though on that one, I like the original way better). See the perfomance here.

[Note: this video version of She & Him seems to be a bit rushed (at least more so than their album version Volume One, which I prefer)]

There are a million other great covers out there — check out Esquire’s huge list! — and I’m looking forward to hearing your favorites.

Ladies of Leisure: West Elm Orange County Grand Opening Party

20121102-194837.jpgThe second event on our Ladies of Leisure calendar was the much-anticipated grand opening of West Elm in Orange County’s posh South Coast Plaza. In fact, it was adjacent to the first event. The West Elm store is absolutely amazing – check out this awesome living wall that greets you when you walk in…stunning!

Mrs. Mercado and I took a leisurely stroll around the store, stopping to gawk about every 3.5 seconds at something we’d tell a store attendant to add to our tab if we were true ladies of leisure (humor us, will ya?). I say, it’s quite a fun dialogue to hear us perusing the shelves, convincing each other that mauvish purple is a color all-too-often overlooked and such a color really makes a feminine statement when accenting a masculine brown leather couch, and don’t forget to gently lay a faux-fur throw on that couch while you’re at it – adds a bit of cozy but chic playfulness, don’t you think? Also, did you know that steel blue gray is the new neutral? You would if you would’ve been eavesdropping in our conversations throughout the night.

So take note: anything you want to buy in a steel blue or grey now has our stamp of approval for purchase including this rug (which actually is really nice and sort of muted so it would be easy to change up the furniture and throw pillows around it) or this grayish (though it looked like a steel blue in store) glider and ottoman (even if you don’t have a baby! because, you know, you might someday and then it would come in really handy to have this glider and ottoman in a fabric that’s posh but casual and it wouldn’t matter if this hypotethical someday baby was a boy or a girl because it’s such a neutral color it could go with anything.) See, it’s practically in your online shopping cart already, right?!

My favorite thing about the event was probably the super simple, chic libation served as a signature drink for the night: a Moscow Mule made with Bundaberg Ginger Beer, vodka and a lime. Uh-mazing! Bundaberg Ginger Beer is one of my favorite non-alcoholic drinks and I’d never thought to add some vodka to it (silly me!), although I do know our good friend Cappy loves his ginger ale with tequila (smart man). I’m definitely thinking I need to stock our bar area with a bottle of vodka for nights when the wine just won’t cut it. And speaking of bar shelves, have you seen my new bar cart/console table (former vanity) find from Goodwill?

A torturously long line at the end of the grand opening evening gave all of us partygoers a good 20-30 minutes of standing around contemplating how much lighter our bank accounts would be if we gobbled up everything we were eyeing in the store…I’m talking about furniture but I should also point out that as far as gobbling goes, the food at the event was superb. And served by extremely good looking men (and women) if we may say so ourselves. Seriously. It was starting to get embarrassing as we tried to catch the eyes of the cater staff to mosey on over with their trays (West Elm, of course). Luckily, jaw dropping at their good looks was a bit masked by stuffing our faces with food. Hey, we’re married anyway.

When Mrs. Mercado asked me at the end of the party what I’d like most having seen everything in the store, I responded: a bigger house! But, if there’s one item I keep dreaming of buying it would definitely be this.

Is there anything on your wish list from West Elm? Have you been to the new store in Orange County?

Splurge vs. Steal: Gold-Rimmed Dinnerware

At West Elm Orange County’s Grand Opening Party (details coming tomorrow), I spotted these elegant and timeless gold-rimmed dinnerware sets  (along with gold flatware – swoon!) but as is with most things, I can’t afford what I love. So, I decided to do a little searching and remembered that Mumbles and I bought cases of plates, bowls and mugs for our wedding from Dollar Tree (seriously!) — we bought it all in light turquoise and a robin’s egg blue color so our tablescapes would look a little more festive against white wedding tablecloths…I just loved them! And, we kept them to use for parties and other gatherings, including Dr. T’s Love Birds Bridal Shower. Each item at Dollar Tree is just $1, and they were able to ship the cases to our local store for us to pick up, which was really convenient. [If you’d like to see some photos of our wedding, you can check them out here on Grey Likes Weddings (still one of my favorite sites even though I’m no longer a bride).]

So, imagine my delight when I saw that Dollar Tree has an affordable collection of gold-rimmed dinnerware that you can purchase just in time for holiday parties and meals! Of course, these classify as the “steal” in the “splurge vs. steal” scenario so you’re not getting porcelain like the West Elm collection; these are ceramic. But still! This is the type of dinnerware you’re not likely to use but for a few months out of the year, anyway, so it makes sense to go for the savings rather than spending a fortune to have it sit tucked away in a cupboard all lonely and sad.  And, FYI — you can order online, but must do so by the case with most items, usually meaning you’ll need to buy in multiples of 12.  I really love this set, though I haven’t seen it in person so I can’t comment on the quality.  They’ve even got tumblers and wine glasses – ahh!  Too much good stuff, I tell ya!

P.S. If you’re trying not to be all matchy-matchy, here’s what I’d do: splurge a little bit on some of these super festive and fun Kamal Snow Dots Salad Plates, which are on sale now at http://www.westelm.com for $32 for a set of four. You can layer these salad plates on top of the dinner plates to break up the monotony of the place setting.

Good plan? Thought so.

P.P.S.  I also found these splurge glasses at Anthropologie.

Floriade 2012

I realized I goofed and never shared photos from our amazing experience at the Floriade during our trip to Europe this past summer.  Better late than never, right?  Check out the slideshow and see the beauty we experienced while there!
