Music obsession: The Local Natives

Local Natives - Hummingbird

Local Natives – Hummingbird

Maybe you’re a lucky person and you scored tickets to one of the LA shows that the Local Natives are playing in January to release their new album, Hummingbird, before they sold out in like 10 seconds. Twice.  I am not so lucky, unfortunately.  Nevertheless, I listen to their album Gorilla Manor quite often so I’m excited for some new tunes from these fellas.  Click here to buy their song “Breakers” off the new album, check out the music video below, like them on Facebook for more updates, and visit their site to see if you’re a lucky one and can catch a live show.

Have you seen Local Natives perform live?  Do you have a favorite song?

Music Obsession: Beach Playlist

In honor of our holiday trip to Hawaii (yay!), I’ve been building up my Beach playlist despite the fact that it’s December.  Here are a few of my favorites from the playlist…anything you’d add?

  1. Anything and everything by Jack Johnson. (He appears like this on a few of my music obsession lists…what can I say? I love me some Jack!)
  2. “El Cerrito Place” + “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem” by Kenny Chesney
  3. “And the Birds Sing” + “Sea Breeze” by Tyrone Wells
  4. “Brighter Than the Sun” by Colbie Caillat
  5. “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys (this is my favorite because it reminds me of Love Actually!)
  6. “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado
  7. “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men (maybe because there is a beach photo on the album cover?)
  8. “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding
  9. “Shadow Days” by John Mayer
  10. “Sea of Love” by Cat Power (from her Covers Record…more covers here)

Music Obsession: Acoustic Songs

  1. “Everlong” by The Foo Fighters — one of my all-time favorites.
  2.  “3 AM” by Matchbox 20 (seriously.)
  3. “Paperweight” by Joshua Radin & Schuyler Fisk — probably could have also made it to my duets list, I love it so.
  4. “The Girl” by City & Colour — I discovered this one during an episode of One Tree Hill believe it or not. well, actually, do; because it’s true.
  5. “Pink Moon” by Nick Drake
  6. “Lights” by Ellie Goulding — she performs this beautifully! Watch the video below (via Ryan Seacrest).
  7. Pretty much anything by Jack Johnson.

You probably know that I love Tyrone Wells.  He does great acoustic performances and his album Close: Live at McClain’s is a compilation of some of the live songs recorded in an awesome little coffee shop in Downtown Fullerton called McClain’s, hence the title.

Do you have a favorite acoustic song?

Music Obsession: Duets

I have just three of my favorite duets to share today as part of my music obsession series, but I would absolutely love it if you’d share some of your favorite duets so I can add them to my playlist.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside” by Willie Nelson & Norah Jones. This magical pairing is so cheeky and fun and actually comes from a Norah Jones album called Featuring, comprised of all duets with some artists you wouldn’t expect like Dolly Parton, Outkast, Q-Tip, Foo Fighters and Ray Charles.  Check it out here.  I also just have to say Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel singing this song in Elf is also totally awesome. ‘Tis the season, right?  Download Willie and Norah’s version and impress all your holiday party guests.

Next is one of my favorite duos who — after recently getting some major awards and recognition — announced they are breaking up. Sad face.  I think I first noticed The Civil Wars singing this song, Poison & Wine, on some tv show (this is a common habit of mine: looking up song lyrics online as they play during television shows) and immediately downloaded it.  It’s such a lovely song and their voices pair so well together.  Let’s hope they patch things up right quick and get back to making great music.

The last one is an incredible performance that usually leaves me a little teary, with some major goosebumps.  “How Great Thou Art” by Vince Gill & Carrie Underwood — watch the video below.  Have tissue handy.  Carrie also performed this at The Grand Ole Opry and you can download that version on iTunes (like I did) and be moved by her powerful voice every morning when getting ready (like I do).

Please leave a comment with your favorite duet below!

Music Obsession: Grace Potter

If you don’t think you know Grace Potter you might be wrong — her song Paris (Ooh La La) was recently featured by one of my favorite contestants on The Voice, she and Kenny Chesney have a hit duet on the country charts, and back in the One Tree Hill days (sniffle sniffle…) the lady herself had a cameo and performed with Bethany Joy Galleotti who played Haley on the show.  You should check them all out, download them on iTunes or wherever you listen to music and be sure to get the Christmas song – I love it and I love that it’s almost time for Christmas music!
