Leather Loveseats

Exciting news: Mumbles and I are in escrow on a new home! I know I shouldn’t be getting carried away before everything is signed and the keys are in our hands but I just can’t help it.  I’ve been pinning away on a secret Pinterest board to keep track of all the ideas I have swirling in my brain for decor, furniture, renovations and storage. I’m having way too much fun and it’s been quite fulfilling seeing as this is the time in pregnancy when I should be nesting, alas, I have no home to currently nest in.

Even though I’m super eager to get all the baby stuff into the new house, what I’m most looking forward to is a larger living room. Our current living room is very small and cozy – you practically spill into it when you walk in the front door and it acts like our entryway, family room for tv watching, eating area, office and library. Since we love to entertain, I keep thinking about seating options. We have a fantastic sofa + chaise sectional that I love and originally I was thinking we could add a corner section to make one giant U shape (it would look a lot like this). But then I realized that the way the living room is laid out, it would mean you’d enter the room and have to walk all the way around a long sofa arm to sit anywhere on the couch. It would close off the room and I don’t like that vibe. Living rooms should be inviting, beckoning you to come on in and make yourself comfy, right?

Instead I was thinking we’d keep the couch as is and add a loveseat. Great idea!  But now I can’t decide if I want it to match our current sofa or get something totally different. Lately, my obsession is leather. I think it’s so rich and masculine, very earthy and would compliment the [yet-to-be-installed] wood floors and the brick fireplace in our new spot. Plus, I love how aged leather looks and it would seemingly be good for kiddos to be able to swipe up spills (minus scratches, I guess…but hey, patina and character, right?) Our current couch is a charcoal gray fabric and we’ve also added the dove gray graham glider from west elm to our seating arrangement so I’ll have a comfy spot to nurse without having to go hide in a room somewhere and miss all the fun (read: tv watching). So, another matching loveseat would be a whole lotta gray in one room.  We can certainly liven up the grays with throw pillows, but it seems like a safe choice and leather is still on my brain. I’ve never had a leather sofa, though, so I’m wondering: have you ever had a leather sofa? What do you think? Love it? Hate it?

Here are my favorite leather sofa/loveseat options that I’ve been secretly pinning and pining over:

Any favorites from this roundup or others to recommend?  I’ve been keeping an eye out on Craigslist, but because I’m not really ready to pull the trigger quite yet, it’s almost too much of a tease.

Sweet Find: Amber Alexander on Etsy

Etsy is a magical, magical world. I’ve been trying to figure out what to put on the walls in our 2nd bedroom/office/Mumbles’ closet/guest room.  I wanted something whimsical and fun and I’d been eyeing watercolors and illustrations for quite some time.  Then, I somehow stumbled upon Amber Alexander’s lovely Etsy shop.  And that’s the magic of Etsy. I want just about everything she makes — beautiful florals, feathers, and furry friends. I simply adore her work.

I ended up purchasing three prints from her shop so that I could put them in these wood frames I found at Target (I love that you can see the grain and knots in the wood).  Meet my three new mates Byron, Duncan and Looker the Alligator.  Mumbles likes Duncan enough to want to take him to work but I’m not quite sure if I can give him up.

Also, Amber was sweet enough to send a few cards in my package which was such a fun surprise.  I was delighted to gift them to some friends later on and even more excited to show them the cute little stories Amber has created for each of the characters on the back of the card. For example, I said “Happy Birthday” with this fabulous card for my wine-loving friend.  The caption read: “I don’t know what could have been ‘hard’ about her day. She’s a cat! not enough catnip? lost her toy? bad fur day?”  I just thought it was darling.  So did my friend.

Super sweet stuff.

What are your favorite Etsy shops?

P.S. I thought Byron, Duncan and Looker all needed to be a foursome (you know, in case they wanted to play golf or something) so I happily scooped up this darling fox by Eastwitching.  Now I’ve got a happy bunch of furry, sophisticated friends!

Splurge vs. Steal: Ombre Fur Throw

Yesterday I shared my current obsession with faux fur and thought you might enjoy these lovely faux fur throws in gorgeous gray ombre — I’ve seen them in person and they’re both perfect for cozy cuddling and glamorous gifting!

Cozy Up to Fur

There’s something about winter (though we don’t quite have winter in California, do we?) that just calls for fur, I think.  I found an awesome pillow at Home Goods the other day – a brownish gray fur on one side and velvet on the other. And I had to have it. Had to. It’s on my couch now in all its soft, cozy, calming awesomeness.  Baxter under one arm, my fur pillow under the other.  And, I realized (how crazy that sounds, yes) that I’ve got a bit of a thing for fur.  Mrs. Mercado and I swooned over the chic but casual fur throw from west elm, I’ve always loved the little white throw from Ikea that you see in nurseries and on at-home office chairs all over Pinterest and Apartment Therapy, and then Target Does It Again kept taking photos of a white faux fur coat that I just had to go out and buy despite the fact that I feel a bit Russian when wearing it (and Mumbles thinks I look like a pretty Chewbacca so sadly, I returned it).  Also, my mother has some gorgeous real fur coats (inherited from my Grammy) that I might someday have the gumption to wear and at the Long Beach Flea Market a few weeks ago I noticed a lot of sellers had vintage coats and stoles and wraps that lots of ladies were happily taking them home.  So yeah, I’ve got faux fur on the brain faux sure. (see what I did there?!)

From coats to hoodies to boots, throws and pillows…how do you feel about fur?

Ladies of Leisure: West Elm Orange County Grand Opening Party

20121102-194837.jpgThe second event on our Ladies of Leisure calendar was the much-anticipated grand opening of West Elm in Orange County’s posh South Coast Plaza. In fact, it was adjacent to the first event. The West Elm store is absolutely amazing – check out this awesome living wall that greets you when you walk in…stunning!

Mrs. Mercado and I took a leisurely stroll around the store, stopping to gawk about every 3.5 seconds at something we’d tell a store attendant to add to our tab if we were true ladies of leisure (humor us, will ya?). I say, it’s quite a fun dialogue to hear us perusing the shelves, convincing each other that mauvish purple is a color all-too-often overlooked and such a color really makes a feminine statement when accenting a masculine brown leather couch, and don’t forget to gently lay a faux-fur throw on that couch while you’re at it – adds a bit of cozy but chic playfulness, don’t you think? Also, did you know that steel blue gray is the new neutral? You would if you would’ve been eavesdropping in our conversations throughout the night.

So take note: anything you want to buy in a steel blue or grey now has our stamp of approval for purchase including this rug (which actually is really nice and sort of muted so it would be easy to change up the furniture and throw pillows around it) or this grayish (though it looked like a steel blue in store) glider and ottoman (even if you don’t have a baby! because, you know, you might someday and then it would come in really handy to have this glider and ottoman in a fabric that’s posh but casual and it wouldn’t matter if this hypotethical someday baby was a boy or a girl because it’s such a neutral color it could go with anything.) See, it’s practically in your online shopping cart already, right?!

My favorite thing about the event was probably the super simple, chic libation served as a signature drink for the night: a Moscow Mule made with Bundaberg Ginger Beer, vodka and a lime. Uh-mazing! Bundaberg Ginger Beer is one of my favorite non-alcoholic drinks and I’d never thought to add some vodka to it (silly me!), although I do know our good friend Cappy loves his ginger ale with tequila (smart man). I’m definitely thinking I need to stock our bar area with a bottle of vodka for nights when the wine just won’t cut it. And speaking of bar shelves, have you seen my new bar cart/console table (former vanity) find from Goodwill?

A torturously long line at the end of the grand opening evening gave all of us partygoers a good 20-30 minutes of standing around contemplating how much lighter our bank accounts would be if we gobbled up everything we were eyeing in the store…I’m talking about furniture but I should also point out that as far as gobbling goes, the food at the event was superb. And served by extremely good looking men (and women) if we may say so ourselves. Seriously. It was starting to get embarrassing as we tried to catch the eyes of the cater staff to mosey on over with their trays (West Elm, of course). Luckily, jaw dropping at their good looks was a bit masked by stuffing our faces with food. Hey, we’re married anyway.

When Mrs. Mercado asked me at the end of the party what I’d like most having seen everything in the store, I responded: a bigger house! But, if there’s one item I keep dreaming of buying it would definitely be this.
